This is a stunning set of Amelia in a first edition, beautifully bound by the famous Zaehnsdorf, circa 1880. Amelia was Fielding's last novel, written as he struggled with sickness. The book was a failure commercially, and after the initial two impressions of this first edition, it would not be reprinted for some time after. There were two impressions (states) made of this first edition and this is likely the second state. The extra leaf "At the Universal Register-Office" is present and bound in at the rear of the second volume, as called for.
This is the finest set currently on the market! Beautifully bound by the famous 19th century Zaehsndorf bindery. Full paneled calf, full gilt to spines, gilt to boards, morocco labels, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, filet edges...just stunning. There are a few mildy rubbed corners, some rubbed raised bands on the spines, mild rubbing to spine ends... very solid hinges, square and tight text blocks, all edges gilt, silk woven end-bands, ex-libris plate of former owner to each front pastedown. The photos, below, reveal the remarkable overall condition of this very attractive set.
The condition of the text matches the condition of the bindings -- great condition. There is very mild toning, if any. The text is tightly bound. One or two small light spots. Just an overall Very Good + to Near Fine set.
If you want to own the best example of this set on the market, then this one, without any doubt, is the one for you.
