Condition: Good binding, Good to Very Good text and plates
This is Fontenelle's most important work, presented here in the 4th overall English edition though the first edition translated into English by Glanvill to contain the additional 6th conversation. This edition also has a wonderful engraved frontis and a folding plate. This important work offered an explaination of the heliocentric model of the universe through a series of "conversations" between a philosopher and a marquise. Even the possibility of extra-terrestrial life is touched upon within the dialogue. This important work is considered one of the most influential of the Enlightenment Age.
Original full calf with blind-stamped boards and paper title label to spine. Rear hinge rubbed, front hinge cracked but boards well attached. Some chipping, rubbing, some leather loss (see photos). The binding has the signs of average use -- Good. Internally, the text ranges from Good to Very Good. Frontis, fold-out, and title with some light soiling, signature to title. Original ads bound in at rear. Old paper repair on verso of foldout. Some sporadic instances of foxing here or there. Otherwise, Very Good. See photos. Mostly Very Good -- a very rare work in good antiquarian collectible condition.
