We are pleased to offer you a rare opportunity to own a true 1st printing of T.S. Eliots “Poems,” published by Knopf in 1920. This first American edition contains many poems, some of which had been published previously in various journals and letters, and this is the first book of Eliot‘s poetry to have been published in America. This poetry book contains the famous “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” along with many others. The point of issue for the true first printing of this first edition book is the typographical error on page 33 where the word “religions” is used rather than the word “religious.” The book is in its original first state with tan hard-covers -- appears to be cloth over boards but is actually paper which has been textured to appear like cloth -- and the top page ends are brown. This is an extremely scarce first edition, especially in a first printing.
Photos reveal the overall great condition. The boards do show some edge wear and better than average shelf-wear. The rare dust-jacket is lacking (hence the drastically lowered price for this copy), though a plastic cover/jacket is provided to protect the book. There is a darkened area on the spine and a portion of the rear board (see photos). The book appears to have scarcely been opened: no foxing, little to no toning (not even on the end-pages), no markings. Hinge lightly split between the front blank and the half-title. At some point in this book’s history, it appears a couple of drops of water fell on the top of the page ends while the book was closed, and there is very minor staining at the top edge -- it is very faint and easily missed, but close-up photos are provided, below. The smaller stain only appears on about the last 25 pages. Overall, the flaws are minimal and only noticeable due to the otherwise excellent condition. Overall, the book is a Very Good and very clean example of one of the most rare poetry books by the master, T.S. Eliot.
