Description: A rare, contemporary book box for Queen Anne. The origin is possibly Portuguese. The covers are adorned with gold filigree decoration on a foliated rococo medallion enclosing bunches of grapes, and edges are covered in fine gold foil. The spine has a nice gold plaque with engraved crown beneath the name of God in Hebrew and a banner reading "By Me Kings Reigne, Anne Regina (Latin for "Queen")" engraved on the bottom. The three filigree baskets of flowers on the spine finish this wonderful design. The clasps are intact and function as they should. Internally, the box is lined in red velvet. This is a very unique piece, likely a gift to Queen Anne, and records show that this box remained in the Stuart family (the royal family) until the late 1800s.
Queen Anne (1664 - 1714) reigned from 1702 until her death in 1714. Anne was the last monarch of the House of Stuart, and as England and Scotland united in 1707, she was also the first sovereign of the Kingdom of Great Britain. That means that when she died in 1714, she technically became the last Queen of England and the last Queen of Scotland. Her other titles included Queen of Ireland and Queen of France. The present box was likely given to her as a gift close to the time she first became Queen, but records do show conclusively that this box remained in her family up until at least the mid to late 1800s.
