Few illustrators can claim the same level of popularity that Gustave Dore enjoys some 125 years after his death. Books illustrated by Dore are highly sought after, and many collect his works without much difficulty because many of his illustrated books are fairly common and were widely reprinted. However, a handful of books illustrated by Dore are incredibly rare, and those few are highly prized by the collector. Such is the case with the present set of Michaud's History of the Crusades (a great text in its own right). Michaud's book was first published some 30 years before this first illustrated edition was undertaken by publisher George Barrie. Dore's works were selected to grace this wonderful, huge, folio set. Between the two volumes, there are 100 full page plates, each with captioned tissue guards. This large number of illustrations combine with the scarcity of this edition to make for one of the most prized of all Dore illustrated works.
Due to the substantial weight of the massive volumes, the original bindings quickly perished, and finding a complete set intact is more difficult than finding a complete copy at all. Here, we are offering the best set available on the market, finely rebound in the Addison's Bindery, in excellent condition, and attractively done with tan 1/2 morocco over faux black morocco boards, beautiful blind-stamping, title in gilt, author and illustrator in gilt, and the attractive red morocco shield onlay bordered in gilt with the white cross (also leather) on the center. This is a very handsome set on the shelf. The fine binding also features leather end-bands and silk-like endpapers.
Internally, the books are also quite good with some variance between the two. Volume one is Very Good to Near Fine with a soft age tone to the text pages. Volume two is also quite clean but with some toning around the borders of the illustrations and some marginal water-staining to the lower edge of the first 80 or so pages, most pronounced on the first page (frontispiece, shown in photo below to show the most severe example). This staining only effects the margins of the plates pages and tissue guard paper, and it does not intrude into any of the illustrations. None of the text pages reveal any staining, probably because of the different paper used for the text pages. The staining is mostly faded and unobtrusive. The worst example is shown in the photos, below. There are a couple of small chips and a couple of closed tears to title page of volume two, and a cracked hinge in the same volume about midway through (not unusual for a text-block of this weight) but both bindings are solid, well restored blocks with no loose or missing pages. Very Sturdy.
If you want one of the most rare of Dore's illustrated books, and especially if you want one in this condition, then this is the only set for you!
Note: Shipping costs for this set will be a bit higher than average. This is a very heavy set of books.
