Condition: Bindings are Very Good, text is Near Fine
This is an excellent and rare complete set of plays. Inchbald's 1st edition of these farces. It is quite rare to find a complete set, and only a handful of single volumes are available on the market. This is a beautiful set in period half-calf bindings with gilt devices to spine compartments over 5 raised-bands, gilt titles and volume contents in red and black, respectively. The bindings do exhibit common flaws. There is some chipping to the leather in places at spine ends, some corners, some edges -- overall, just general shelf-wear and age. A few front hinges are split or starting, but the splits are closed and the binding is very solid in construction, so the flaw is only visual rather than structural. The marbled boards are nice, and the end-papers are also marbled. The page ends are yellow, the bindings are very tight and square. Internally, the books are all in remarkable condition. There on the end-papers, there are two ex-libris plates: one from a private owner, and one from the Library of St. Paul's School. The books look entirely unread for the most part. The only flaws are a few light pencil notations that can be easily erased. The pages are white, clean, crisp...remarkably clean. A very nice example of this set.
