This is an excellent book in excellent condition with 10 folding plates.  This large Spilsbury printing is most prized with its wonderful plates, large paper format, and excellent paper quality.  Drinkwater joined the Royal Manchester volunteers (72nd regiment) at the age of fifteen. The garrison was sent to Gibraltar and besieged by a Franco-Spanish force between June 1779 and February 1783. Using the notes he compiled, Drinkwater later wrote this history which went through four editions in four years.

The binding is original full calf, recased with original spine laid on.  Some rubbing/bumping to corners with slight loss, some other chips to extremities -- the binding has been fully restored and preserved to be durable and not in danger of further deterioration.  The hinges are strong, the binding tight and square, and the binding is in beautiful condition.  Very Good overall.

The text is incredibly clean.  Most pages are bright, clean and crisp.  We find little to no foxing, only a few pages are lightly toned when compared to the majority which is quite bright and fresh.  There are 4 maps and 6 plates, all of which are folding.  All have some foxing, and a couple have very small closed tears near the portion that is bound in near the hinge of the book.  The larger folding map has tear repairs at the back on one of the folds, and there is some tone to the creases.  Overall, Very Good with unusually clean text.
