This is a very nice set of William of Newburg's important historical work on the periods of the mid 11th century to the mid 12th century. The work focuses largely on the reigns of Henry II & Richard I, and it features 4 folding engravings. This is a very rare Oxford edition of a work that is rare in just about any edition, and the condition of the present set is excellent.
Period full calf bindings with gilt borders, volume 1 rebacked with original spine laid on, other two volumes with cracking to hinges but held very firmly by the cords. The set can be handled without worry, lightly and nicely restored and buffed to a nice sheen both for beauty and preservation, ready for the shelf. Light edgewear and typical chips to head and tail of spines. Bindings are Good or better to Very Good. Internally, the pages are Very good or better with very little foxing or toning, very crisp and bright throughout, no tears in the folding plates. Overall excellent condition. Some minor instances of old marginal notations in a few places, minor notations to rear blank in period hand at rear of volume 3, small notation to front blank of first volume dated 1849 noting that the 3 volumes have been "collated" and are "perfect."
This is an excellent set and is very difficult to find. This particular set is extremely clean and we cannot imagine finding another copy in better internal condition.
