We are happy to offer this very nicely printed book, presented in a nice quarto size with many illustrations throughout, complete with tissue guards. The condition is quite nice. The binding is lightly rubbed and scuffed, bumped/rubbed corners, and small split in the cloth at top hinge of rear board. Internally, the book is very clean although there are some old faint stains to the margins in places...these are shown in photos, below, but they are very minor and unobtrusive and probably difficult to see. The paper is of good quality with only a mild tone. A very clean copy. Top edge gilt. The block is lightly shaken as is common with books of this era and construction, but all is well bound with a cracked hinge here and there. Each of the 12 full page illustrations retain the original tissue guards, and there are other loose tissue guards placed here and there throughout. The extra guards were meant to be used for those pages with the in-text illustrations, but they've been moved around over time...it's surprising they are even still there at all.
Overall, this is just a very nice and clean copy and an interesting work of fiction. There is a gift inscription from Christmas of 1899 on front blank which is actually a bit humorous: "Christmas 1899. Here is a good book spoiled by a bad artist, for a good boy from his bad brother Brit(?)" It seems he did not think as highly of these illustrations as we do today!
