This is a very rare volume of Clarendon's tracts, published from original manuscripts. The work is often found bound as one single volume of about 700 pages. The present copy was split into two volumes, and the second volume is not present. This first volume contains tracts concerning Happiness, Envy, Drunkeness, Anger, Patience in Adversity, Promises, Liberty, Conscience, War, Peace, and Sacrilege (among many others). This is a large folio, and the pages are mostly remarkably clean.
The binding is original leather over paper boards. The hinges are cracked but the cords are holding the boards very well and all is intact. The leather and paper boards are chipped with loss in numerous places (see photos, below). Internally, the book is mostly very clean and bright. Some old markings to title page and front pastedown, one signature intext, title page cropped at upper margin. About the last 20 leaves with some worming at the inner gutters, and some staining in the same location closer to the end of the text. Staining to front and rear blanks. Very faint, old water-line to inner margin (upper) that may be difficult to see in photos (but a close-up is provided, below. Mostly very clean and bright, with little if any foxing.
