Condition: Binding is Very Good, text is Very Good
Provenance: from the library of former Gov. LeRoy Collins at the historic estate at The Grove (click here for details)
This is another fine selection from the historic estate at The Grove. A letter authenticating provenance will be provided with this book. This is the first appearance of the second English translation of Father Bouhour's work, and this particular translation is almost entirely a new work as it loosely translates the work of Bouhours while adding its own references to English writers (Howell). The work itself is set up as a dialogue between two parties who discuss what exactly makes a great literary work. This is an important work and invaluable in understanding contemporary literary ciriticism.
The present example is in very nice condition in period 1/2 calf. Binding is Very Good, intact, with cracked fronge hinge but cords very solid, rear board with minor cracks to hinges but also holding very firmly. Rubbing/chipping at extremities, edgewear, nicely and professionally restored to preserve the binding and restore beauty. Internally, the text is very bright and crisp with only some minor foxing in places throughout...a finely printed book. Front fly leaf torn (see photo) and large chip from the upper margin of the title page (see photo). Several very nice cuts within text including some fine head-pieces and ornamental initials as well. Publisher's ad leaf still present and bound in at the rear. A nice book, a nice copy.
