Provenance:  from the library of former Gov. LeRoy Collins at The Grove

This is one of the prettiest books you will find, and it is fitting that this binding that contains Du Fresnoy's Art of Painting is itself a work of art.  The volume also contains Richard Graham's "A Short Account of the most Eminent Painters."  Du Fresnoy discusses many topics related to painting, especially painting the human form.  The text is quite useful in the understanding of appreciation of art, to say the least.  The other fine features of the book, aside from the nice condition and binding, are the finely engraved frontis and vignette, fine quality paper, and provenance.  This book is one of several purchased from the estate of former Florida Governor LeRoy Collins at the historic Grove estate;  a letter attesting to the book's provenance will accompany this book.  For more information on The Grove and Gov. LeRoy Collins, click here.

The condition of the book is Very Good.  1/2 green morocco with gilt over marbled boards.  Some edgewear, bumping to corners, a few surface chips to leather, front hinge just barely starting.  All is well intact and secure -- very well bound and well preserved.  the base of the spine has an old label (oval in shape) which is not legible.  There are no markings internally, and this may be an old book-sellers stamp simply applied to the spine.  Internally, only a mellow age tone throughout with little or no foxing and only the tiny spot here or there...Very Good and free of markings as well.  Overall, this is a very, very nice book, finely printed and with excellent provenance.
