We are happy to offer an uncommon 1st edition of The Visitor. While some other authors contributed, most of the essays contained in the work were written by William Dodd between 1760 to 1761. Dodd was a clergyman who, after falling into debt, forged Lord Chesterfield's name on a bond, and he was sentenced to death. Though many figures, including Samuel Johnson, would plead on his behalf, Dodd was hanged for his crime about 10 years after the publication of this work. The subjects of the essays vary from the religious to the literary.
Two volumes bound in contemporary speckled calf. Volume one lacks title label and the leather is cracked down the spine, but the text block is actually solid and all intact (seems to have been restored at an earlier date). Some cracking to hinges but boards holding very well, not loose. Some light and general edgewear, bumped/rubbed corners. Overall, antiqued and attractive. Internally, there are some pencil marks which can be erased on the front and rear blanks, book-plate of "Prickett" on front pastedown, former owner signature to front blank of volume 2, endpages with the typical marginal staining, one of the rear blanks chipped at top margin. The text itself is very clean throughout, little to no foxing, Very Good or better, nice quality paper. Internal flaws primarily limited to the common places (e.g. end-papers and pastedowns). Frontis engraving in volume one in nice condition as well with some light off-setting to adjacent title page. Clean copy.
