We are proud to offer an extremely scarce narrative of a voyage undertaken in 1741. The book recounts the journey and shipwreck of the "Wager." We don't want to give away the story for the future owner of this book, but the tale recounts not only the wreck but a mutiny as these sailors try to make a way back home. This is a very scarce Dublin printing. The first edition was printed in London in the same year (1743). The Dublin edition is the more scarce of the two and is printed in a slightly smaller format.
The condition is Very Good externally with a recent restoration and rebacking in our bindery. The spine is nicely gilt, and the original calf boards have been entirely restored and buffed. The edges do show the former chipping, and the boards show some of the old scuffs and cracks that lend the outward appearance a nice character. The book is ready to be handled without fear. Internally, the condition is mostly Good to Very Good. New marbled end-papers are done in a period style with the colors and feel of waves crashing (great look for this shipwreck narrative.) There is some light soiling in places throughout but mostly to the first pages with the pages becoming cleaner and brighter as you move beyond the preface pages and first several pages of the narrative. Two pages with marginal chips (not affecting text) are shown in photos below, and otherwise there are a few closed marginal tears (very small). Photos show worst examples of flaws. Overall, this is a nice book in good antiquarian collectible condition.
