John Kay's Original Portraits has been sought after ever since it was first printed in 1837/38. With well over 320 curious plates by the miniature artist, this work is a visual tidal wave of witty art and accompanying commentary. Shortly after the death of Kay and his wife, these plates (which Kay had worked on for quite some time prior to his death) were brought to public sale and acquired by Hugh Paton. Paton wasted little time in producing this wonderful publication, and these large volumes have been coveted by collectors ever since. Making the present set particularly rare are the original cloth bindings which are rarely found -- most did not survive and were rebound.
Very Good. Original green cloth bindings, recased and with normal edge wear. Tightly bound and sound in construction. Internally a fresh copy with some moderate foxing in places, occasional soiling, and some light offsetting to pages adjacent to plates. Signatures to title pages. Overall, better than average. A very good copy in original cloth and gilt presentation.
