Ripa's Iconologia was, is, and always will be an invaluable resource. This famous iconographic dictionary is considered to be the primary source for how symbolism was understood by Ripa's contemporaries. This work first appeared in 1593, but without illustrations. Here we offer the second edition which was illustrated with over 150 3/4 page woodcut illustrations. If you are familiar with emblem books, iconography, or symbols, then you will immediately recognize the images you find throughout -- variants of these woodcuts appear in countless other emblem books and in art. This is a truly rare and important work.
The binding is absolutely beautiful. Fresh from Addison's bindery, the recent full, paneled calf is nicely done in period style with full mitred gilt on the spine. The boards are nicely blind-stamped. New hand-made silk end-bands cap the text block, and beautiful period style marbled papers finish off the binding. New blank end-papers are also present in a period style paper.
The text is Good+ to Very Good -- paper quality varies slightly throughout causing some pages to be more tanned than others. The text has been completely cleaned and restored, page by page. While any foxing was removed during that process, some of the pages that were more damp-stained and browned prior to cleaning still remain somewhat tanned. The paper quality varies in that some pages are slightly thinner than others. The title page has paper repairs to the fore-edge and bottom edge. There are three instances of an old, church stamp: one on the title page, one on the last "Registro" page, and one in the margin of a text page (does not touch text). We are providing nearly 50 photos, most of which show text and illustration condition overall.
This is a great book, mostly only found in a few libraries' rare book rooms.
