This is a very rare report on Native American relations with the U.S. Government. The report includes a lengthy preface by the Commissioner who reports progress with many Indians "realizing" the must conform to "white man's ways" or "perish." It is an interesting glance at the 19th century perspective on Indian relations, from the point of view of the U.S. Government. There are pages of various reports from various agencies and locations, and there are also many charts showing things such as expenditures as well as statistical measures of hunting, education, farming (among many others) among the various tribes. The book also includes an impressive, large, folding map bound in at the back, mostly showing the locations of various Indian reservations and tribes. The map alone is quite valuable, especially given the great condition.
The internal condition is very good with no flaws to state other than some age-toning and a neat book-plate of the previous owner (John Dillon) on the front paste-down. The large folding map looks like it has never been unfolded until we did so to take photos for this listing -- No tears, no markings, great condition. The binding is Good, showing average wear. Black cloth over boards. Title faded on spine, rubbed/bumped corners. Cloth at head and tail of spine frayed/rubbed with mild loss of cloth.
A rare book full of interesting information offering great insight into perspectives on Native American relations in the late 1800s.
