This is an absolutely stunning book of good proportions. It is an exemplary copy of which none other can be found in this complete and wonderful condition with 15 full page engravings present. There are beautiful wood-cut devices/ornaments throughout the book -- a very nice printing on fine paper. The period binding has been housed in an original period slip-case which has contributed greatly to the superb condition. Our research leads us to believe that this is probably the finest copy in existence, and certainly the only copy currently on the market with the 15 engravings present. The paper quality is outstanding, though it does vary slightly throughout. Some pages are slightly toned, and others (most, about 95%) are bright and clean, nearly "Mint" or as new. The first few pages of the body of the work are very lightly toned with a few light spots, else they are bright white and clean. The engravings are also superb -- large, clean, superbly designed. You may notice that a few of the engravings have the captions folded up (and they fold down), and a couple of the captions are partially shaved as a result of the binder trimming the pages uniformly. As is the case with bindings from the 1700's, the binding is attached directly to the text block -- this typically causes great strain to the hinges with use. This copy has a very slightly split hinge, only at the base of the text block, about midway through -- very minor. And, again due to the binding method, a few signatures are very slightly displaced so that the page ends are not perfectly flat. These are all very minor faults in a book that shows signs of very minimal use. Marbled end papers are intact with no splitting at the gutters. Page ends are gold gilt, and the gold is bright and clean -- no doubt a result of the book being housed in the case. The binding is a deep brown (nearly black) full calf. The only defects are very lightly bumped corners (very lightly), and two worm holes at the base of the spine which are difficult to see and go no further. There is heavy and elaborate gold gilt to the spine with only minimal loss or rubbing; there are also double fillet lines on the boards. The gold is very bright -- proof of a high quality gold, and further proof that the slip-case protected the book very well. The slip-case is full leather with marbled paper covering the inside. The top and bottom portions are splitting but still very firmly intact. Otherwise, the case also shows the usual rubbing and scratching. Overall, this is a superb example of a very scarce book. The buyer can be somewhat certain that he or she owns the finest, or certainly one of the finest, examples in existence.
